Production on my short film JUDY is in full motion now. My meager prop budget has yielded some really cool stuff for relatively little money from places like Etsy, Wayfair, and Spoonflower. All have unique finds, but Etsy and Spoonflower are full of work from really great artists.
Here's a camera test I did of some of the props I've bought for the sets.
APRIL 21, 2019
It's been too long. I've been away, not back to stay, just checking in to mark the moment.
Spring has sprung in Phoenix, and there's been lots of activity around the compound. My neighbor's front-yard garden continues to grow more amazing all the time.
It's glorious living among such beauty, and Harmony With Nature seems to be the theme of the moment. The cats lie on the front lawn, birds are nesting, flowers blooming. It's a zen paradise.
This is the first year a hummingbird has built her nest where I could watch it from my sofa (where this hand-held footage was shot).
I bought a bike and ride it most mornings around the neighborhood, avoiding heavy traffic areas. I love it so much I'd hitchhike to the basement of the Alamo to retrieve it.
A few months ago I discovered that there's a park (Granada) just a few blocks away, if you use the tunnels under the freeway. There are bike paths along the canal. I passed a family of mother, father, and baby ducks the other day. Wish I'd thought to get a photo. The babies were so fuzzy and adorable. The bike paths have sculptures along them, and the park is so beautiful. There are two ponds, and people fishing. I've lived here for nearly nine years, and I never knew it was there before.
In lieu of a vacation this year, I bought a 3-room tent (for $116 new!) and set it up on the patio.
Tent technology has changed so much since my family had one. It was really easy to assemble, though I had understood that it was one of those that just popped open. I'm still in the process of getting the tent all set up. I may not be able to keep it through the summer, but I expect come fall it will return. The weather's been beautiful and the air fresh and crisp. Sleeping under the full moon has been amazing. Eventually, I hope to be able to use it as a nighttime art studio, but we shall see how the weather goes.
The sad news is that one of my other neighbor's cats is sick and may not make it. He's the sweetest guy, so friendly. He's only about two years old. Brien found him and his twin sister as homeless kittens. I'm allergic to cats, but I've been able to hold him with no problem. He's a gorgeous soul, so hard to see him sickly.
On the work front, I've been deeply focused on several projects, one of which is a music video for a friend. I'm also working simultaneously on a few albums (DIVINE CREATURES concept art above, just in time for Easter) and starting preproduction for those videos. I've been composing new tracks as well, some songs I'm really excited about. It'll be 2020 before the first of anything premieres, probably.
Check the music player above left for the current (unfinished) mix for WIND OF CHANGE. It's a Bee Gees song I first wanted to try in 1982. Nearly forty years later, I've almost completed it. Vocals still in scratch form. I've altered the lyrics to fit the times.
FEBRUARY 6, 2019
I stated that I would report the earnings for haunted by the end of January, 2019, but life intrudes. I'm finally able to get back into my account here after my iMac died. It's been a long process of getting everything restored. I'll make my report ASAP.
One of the things I hear upon listening to haunted now is that some things got rushed to meet the Halloween deadline. It was an intentional test, and I'm proud of the album, but I'd change a few things now. One of those things is the playlist order. Here's the preferred order:
1. bag of bones
2. heart soup filagree
3. darkness at the top of the stairs
5. if you could read my mind
6. the phantom of farthingales
8. spectral voices
9. the rest of me
10. after the fall/the ghost in me
11. endless hallway
12. behind that locked door
13. metaphysical manor
haunted is now available to fill you with chills.
I collect vintage Little Golden Books, and J.P. Miller is one of my favorite LGB illustrators. This collection from The National Museum of American History is stunning. It's rare that we get to see the original paintings, and here they're presented in what remains of their camera-ready form. For those who don't know, in the days of analog bookmaking, these flats were physically painted by hand in gouache, at 100% page size.
Text would be printed out in either hot type or phototypsetting methods, and attached with glue. The final flats would then be photographed and the negatives would be edited to block out shadows and other artifacts in order to make a clean white background.

WHO IS THE MYSTERIOUS
DR. F. SOLÅR?
AN INVESTIGATION INTO AN INVITATION
The Southland Gazette
Born in Hafnarfjörður, Iceland to unlisted parents, and raised by Eritrean nuns in Belgium, self-described “Incomparable Genius” Dr. F. Solår (“Iceland’s Warmest Person”) is the inventor of TheSÜT® from Sunshine Underpants Technologies, a subsidiary of Heels Online Express—a now-defunct reseller of unpaired, pre-owned men’s shoes.
His mysterious past is littered here and there with bankruptcies and scandal, but a lack of other official documents equates to scant knowledge of the shadowy Dr.’s whereabouts and whatabouts since about 1966, when he was kicked out of Ghent Eritrean Parochial Convent and Ye Olde Cheese Shoppe at age sixteen for an undefined footwear violation.
Ghent police records also show that he was twice charged, before the age of sixteen, for selling home-made time-travel devices on the street without a license. Reports suggest that the customers who bought the devices were very unhappy with the quality of their time-travel experience.
Solår is also listed as inventor and sales girl for a bankrupt company called Vast Holdings, Incorporated, LLC, which had a display booth at an electronics industry convention in Húsavík, Iceland in 2004. Records from the event show him as the business owner at a booth selling pre-owned, unmatched shoes, as well as something called Dr Doo-Widdle®, a patented robotic dog-poop scooper-upper. Reports indicate that he was kicked out of the convention for biting a customer, although it isn’t clear whether the customer was human or canine.
Now, years later, the mysterious Dr. Solår will appear once again, with an upcoming exhibit of his latest and “Most Revolutionary Spectacular Invention,” a Residential VR (Virtual Reality) suit that, according to the press release, “…allows any loser to choose his destiny.”
More from the press release (which arrived in a strawberry-scented envelope):
Designed for the modern lifestyle of tech-addicted losers ignoring everyone and everything around them, TheSÜT® offers worlds to conquer through a breathtaking selection of highly specialized fantasy environments to please every stupid loser.
Utilizing the unparalleled genius of its Battery Operated Blutooth Digital Plasma Nutritional Delivery System (BOBDPNDS), the patent-pending MmmmWand® sucks up nutritional data from edible objects, then delivers that data (via blutooth, wifi, USB, radio frequency, or UPS) to the user’s TungHuggr® unit—where digital plasma processes the data and then helpfully masticates it into tasty and nutritional morsels of clotted nourishment swill, without a need for plates or silver service! Taste tests prove that losers who do taste tests love it!
Now Dr. Solår brings his brilliant, world-ignored genius to the Southland, in a spectacular Multi-Media Mass-Media Event that will change the game in the loser industry called VR. Presented with stunning showmanship, technical wizardry, unmatched pyrotechnics, advanced engineering, avant-garde choreography, and jaw-dropping stage magic, Dr. F. Solår will unveil the world’s most revolutionary VR suit the world has ever known in all of its loser history. Losers beware!
Sounds tempting. We look forward to seeing what Dr. Solår and TheSÜT® have to offer when he premieres the product at an exclusive Multi-Media Mass-Media Launch next week. Dress is casual. Lunch will be served.
